Hunter Education & Hunting License

To legally hunt in Ontario, individuals must hold a valid Outdoors Card, hunter accreditation, and—if using firearms—a firearms license (PAL).

Fully Online Training Available
You no longer need to attend in-person sessions. Ontario now allows completion of the Hunter Education Course fully online (self-paced), followed by a final exam. Upon passing, you will receive a Certificate of Completion, which must be submitted to ServiceOntario (or a licence issuer) to record your accreditation with the Fish & Wildlife Licensing Service. Once accredited, you may purchase hunting licenses and tags online or in person.

Course Fee

The Ontario online hunter education course is priced at approximately $60 + tax.

How to Complete the Online Course

1. Register and pay via the approved online portal.
2. Work through the modules and quizzes at your own pace.
3. Successfully pass all chapter quizzes and the final exam (typically ≥80% pass mark).
4. Print your certificate and submit it to ServiceOntario or a licence issuer.
5. Once your accreditation is accepted, you may purchase your hunting licence(s).

Important Notes for Firearm Hunters
If you plan to hunt using firearms, you must also hold a valid firearms licence (PAL or equivalent). Be prepared to carry both your hunter accreditation and firearms licence with you while hunting.

Frequently Asked Questions
• Can I take the course entirely online?
Yes — Ontario permits full online completion of the Hunter Education Course. No mandatory in-person attendance.

• Do I need this even if I already have a PAL?
Yes — the hunter education course is separate from firearms accreditation; both may be required depending on your hunting plans.
• Can I hunt if I don’t have a firearms licence?
You can use your hunter accreditation for non-firearm methods (e.g. bow) if allowed by law, but you cannot legally use firearms without proper firearms licensing.
• What happens after passing the course?
Submit your certificate, ensure it’s recorded with the Fish & Wildlife Licensing Service, then purchase your licence(s) at Hunt & Fish Ontario or in person.
